Should You Stay With Your Firm When Your Advisor Leaves?
When a financial advisor you trust leaves, it can feel personal. You have shared goals, asked difficult questions, and built a relationship over the years. Suddenly, you need to decide who will help you next.
My advice is to understand your options before choosing. Ask the firm who will manage your accounts, what changes about your service, and whether any deadlines need attention. Meet the proposed replacement and ask how they would approach your situation.
If retirement is getting closer, look closely at the planning process. Can the advisor help you evaluate income needs, Social Security decisions, healthcare coverage, and taxes? Ask what a written retirement plan would include and which services involve outside professionals.
Make sure you understand the costs. Ask what you will pay in dollars, what is included, and whether additional services carry separate charges. I also want you to know who will answer your questions and how often you will review the plan together.
Staying with the firm may make sense. Choosing a different advisor may make sense. The goal is to find a person and process that fit the retirement decisions ahead of you.
